Abstract

Wastewater with oil-in-water emulsions could decrease the dissolved oxygen level in the water and thus results to water pollutions. The wastewater must be treated before it could be released into the environment. However, this kind of wastewater is difficult to precipitate and the process needs longer time. Therefore, this research aimed to develop a high-efficiency technique for the oil-in-water emulsion treatment plan by generating a semiconductor anode for oxidizing oil-in-water emulsions in the photo-electrocatalytic degradation. Moreover, the prototype cell was designed and studied to produce a rapid, convenient, efficient, and economical wastewater treatment. The study was divided into two parts.

In the first part, the bismuth vanadate (BiVO [subscript 4]) semiconductor anode was developed. The bismuth vanadate (BiVO [subscript 4]) was deposited on fluorine doped tin oxide (FTO) glass substrates using cyclic voltammetry deposition (CVD). To acquire the maximum oxidation efficiency, the optimum conditions for bismuth vanadate anodes were studied and the anode properties were investigated. First, the optical absorption of the anodes was examined using a UV/Vis spectrophotometer. Then, the photo-electrocatalytic oxidation in aqueous solutions was analyzed using a potentiostat and the charge transfer resistance was studied using electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS). Next, the surface morphology was investigated by scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The crystalline structures were studied using X-ray diffraction (XRD) and the chemical composition of the thin film deposition on the anode surface was confirmed by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). The study revealed that to maximizing oxidation efficiency of the bismuth vanadate anode in aqueous solution by cyclic voltammetry, the optimum conditions were as follows: the electrolyte solution pH was 4.5 and the temperature of the electrolyte solution was 40 °C. The number of scan process and the scan rate were 1 cycle and 50 mV/s, respectively. The applied potential was between +1.5 V to +2.5 V (vs Ag/AgCl). Finally, the fabricated electrode was calcinated at 500 °C for 1 hour. These results confirmed that the properties of the bismuth vanadate (BiVO [subscript 4]) semiconductor anode corresponds to the photo-electrocatalytic properties.

In the second part, the prototype cell for the cutting oil, as an example of oil-in-water emulsions, removal was designed and studied. In the prototype cell, the prepared bismuth vanadate anode was placed in parallel with a zinc plate cathode in the electrolyte solution of 0.1 M sodium sulfate. The applied potential was controlled at 1.0 V. Under the visible light irradiation and an increasing flow of solution through the electrodes with a pump, it was found that the prototype cell could degrade 76 % of cutting oil and could achieve the COD removal rate of 78 % within 7 hours. The result confirmed that the developed FTO / BiVO [subscript 4] anodes could be used in the designed prototype and it showed high-efficiency in oil-in-water emulsion removal process. This result pointed out that the photo-electrocatalytic prototype cell was a convenient, fast, and economical method suitable for further industry level development.
